Yes, the Sound of Music tour runs in winter. The 2:00 pm tour ends after dark from late autumn. A guest who reviewed it on 30 October 2026 wrote that they arrived back in the dark, with the steps and the fountain in pitch black. In December the sun sets earlier still, so on the afternoon tour much of the drive back from the lakes is in the dark.

The 9:15 am tour is back at Mirabellplatz four hours later. That leaves the afternoon for Mirabell Gardens, which are across the square from the terminal, and the evening for the market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, open until 8:30 pm or later on most days.

The Christmas market and the tour on one day

Start at the terminal at 9:15 am. After the tour, cross to Mirabell Gardens, 0.2 km on foot, then walk into the old town: Residenzplatz is 1.1 km on foot from the terminal. The market stays open into the evening every day except 24 December, when it closes at 3 pm, 25 and 26 December and 1 January, when it opens 11 am to 6 pm, and 31 December, when it runs 10 am to 6 pm apart from selected food stands.

Vespers at Nonnberg

The nuns of Nonnberg sing Vespers at 5 pm Monday to Saturday and at 4:30 pm on Sundays and holidays. From November to February, listening needs registration by e-mail by the day before (Tourismus Salzburg, checked November 2026). The abbey is 1.7 km on foot from the terminal, uphill above the old town. It is a working convent: there is no sightseeing in the church during services.
