The New Sound of Music Museum at Hellbrunn

The Salzburg Museum's Sound of Music museum at Hellbrunn: opened September 2026, closed until 20 March 2027, EUR 8, how to get there, and which tours give you time for it.

Updated November 2026

The Salzburg Museum opened a Sound of Music museum by Hellbrunn’s park on 20 September 2026. It is closed for the winter and reopens on 20 March 2027, and adults pay EUR 8 (Salzburg Museum, checked November 2026). No tour on this site includes admission. The coach tour from Mirabellplatz stops in Hellbrunn’s garden for photos only. The one that leaves time for the museum is Bob’s small-group tour below, which in summer allows 20 to 25 minutes there; it is from $104 a person (checked November 2026) and needs two people to book.

The museum is run by the Salzburg Museum. It opened for a short first season, from 20 September to 1 November 2026. The original gazebo from the film stands in the palace park outside, and the museum shows a true-to-scale replica inside. Neither the museum nor Hellbrunn says whether the original gazebo needs a museum ticket, or whether it can be reached on its own in winter.

GetYourGuide checked November 2026; Viator checked November 2026.

The full days that add Hallstatt or the salt mine, and the tours with a meal or a cooking class, all include the coach tour, so their Hellbrunn stop is the same photo stop.

If you want the museum and the film tour in one half day in summer, Bob’s tour is the one built for it.

Hellbrunn Palace and the trick fountains

The museum is separate from Schloss Hellbrunn, the palace with the trick fountains. The palace and the fountains have their own tickets and their own season: daily from 28 March to 1 November in 2026, then closed until 25 March 2027 (Schloss Hellbrunn, checked November 2026). None of the Sound of Music tours includes them.

Getting there on your own

Map of the Sound of Music film locations south of Salzburg's old town: the Hellbrunn gazebo 7.1 km by road from the tour terminal on Mirabellplatz, with Schloss Leopoldskron 4.6 km and Schloss Frohnburg 5.3 km by road on the way
Hellbrunn is the southernmost of the film locations: the gazebo is 7.1 km by road from the terminal on Mirabellplatz, past Leopoldskron and Frohnburg.

The gazebo is 7.1 km by road from the tour terminal on Mirabellplatz, or 5.9 km on foot. Bus 25 stops at Salzburg Schloss Hellbrunn. On the way, the Hellbrunner Allee passes Schloss Frohnburg, 5.3 km by road from the terminal. Leopoldskron, 4.6 km by road, is west of that road on its own lake, and it is not open to the public.

If you would rather ride, the bike tour from Nonntal follows the Hellbrunner Allee to the park and its pavilion for €30 (checked November 2026, priced in euros).

An exhibition that has closed

Before the museum opened, the Salzburg Museum showed a Sound of Music exhibition inside Schloss Leopoldskron, from 6 February 2025 to 1 February 2026. It has closed, and the palace is again closed to the public. A page that still sends you to Leopoldskron for the exhibition is out of date.
