A Full Day: the Sound of Music Tour with Hallstatt or the Salt Mine

Full-day Sound of Music tours from Salzburg: a morning in Hallstatt or in the Berchtesgaden salt mine, then the coach tour. Hours, what is included, and prices.

Updated November 2026

Salzburg Panorama Tours joins its four-hour Sound of Music coach tour to a morning trip in two ways. The ten-hour day below takes you to Hallstatt for about two hours first, from $156 a person (checked November 2026); the nine-hour day takes you into the salt mine at Berchtesgaden, across the border in Germany, with the ticket included. Take the Hallstatt day if you want the village as well as the film sites; take the salt mine day if you would rather go underground, and bring your passport.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The Hallstatt day was the same price on 12 November and 8 December 2026. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.

Hallstatt and the film sites

Illustration. Hallstatt, the morning half of the ten-hour day from Salzburg.

The coach leaves the terminal on Mirabellplatz at 8:15 am and drives through the Salzkammergut by Fuschl, St. Gilgen, Strobl and Bad Goisern. In Hallstatt you have about two hours on your own. There is no time for the salt mine there, and the sights in the village are not part of the tour: you arrange any visit yourself, and the Bone House keeps seasonal hours. The coach comes back a different way, by Gosau and Abtenau, and in the afternoon you join the Sound of Music coach tour. Hotel pickup, food and drinks are not included.

Ten hours is a long day for two hours in Hallstatt. It suits a first visit with one day for the lakes, when you would rather not plan the trip yourself. It does not suit anyone who wants a slow afternoon in the village.

Bob’s Special Tours sells its own eight-hour version on Viator, a public tour of the film sites and Hallstatt, for €154 a person (checked November 2026, priced in euros). It meets at Bob’s office at 8:30 am for a 9:00 am start: a short city tour, the back of Leopoldskron and its lake, the gazebo, the lake district, about two hours on your own in Hallstatt, and the wedding church at Mondsee. Entrance fees and food are not included.

Map of the lake district on the Sound of Music tour: the Mirabellplatz terminal in Salzburg, the Fuschlsee, St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee 30 km by road, and the Mondsee basilica 15 km by road from St. Gilgen and 29 km by road from the terminal
The afternoon half of both full days: the coach tour’s lake district stops, St. Gilgen and Mondsee.

The salt mine and the film sites

The morning goes into the Bavarian Alps to the salt mine at Berchtesgaden. A skip-the-line ticket for the mine is included, and because the mine is in Germany you need a valid passport on the day. In the afternoon you join the same Sound of Music coach tour. It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or for wheelchair users.

Underground or on a lake shore, the afternoon is the same. Pick the morning that interests you more.

If nine or ten hours is too much, the coach tour on its own takes four: see the coach tour stop by stop.
