Panorama's Original Sound of Music Tour, Stop by Stop

Salzburg Panorama Tours' Original Sound of Music Tour stop by stop: Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn, Nonnberg, St. Gilgen, Mondsee, the price, and what it leaves out.

Updated November 2026

The Original Sound of Music Tour is Salzburg Panorama Tours’ four-hour coach tour, and “Original” is the operator’s name for it. It leaves Mirabellplatz at 9:15 am and 2:00 pm, makes photo stops at Schloss Leopoldskron, the garden at Hellbrunn, Nonnberg Abbey and St. Gilgen, and gives you free time in Mondsee. It is from $84 a person (checked November 2026). Book it for the film sites and the lakes in half a day; know before you go that the stops are outside and entry to the places is not included.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The price was the same on 12 November, 8 December and 19 December 2026, for one person or two. There is one option, the public tour, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.

What each stop shows you

Schloss Leopoldskron

The palace’s exterior stood in for the family’s home, and its lake is where the children went boating. You see it from outside: the palace and its park are not open to the public, and only guests of the house go in (Tourismus Salzburg, checked November 2026). The Salzburg Museum’s exhibition inside the palace ran from February 2025 to 1 February 2026 and has closed. Staying there is one way in: Panorama sells two or three nights at Schloss Leopoldskron with this tour included, on dates in November 2026 and in autumn 2027 when we read it (checked November 2026). The hotel also sells its own guided tour of rooms that are otherwise closed.

Hellbrunn’s garden

The gazebo from the film stands in the palace park, and this is a photo stop there. The palace and its trick fountains are separate tickets and closed until 25 March 2027 (Schloss Hellbrunn, checked November 2026). The new Sound of Music museum next to the park opened on 20 September 2026; the stop leaves no time for it, and it is closed for the winter until 20 March 2027. See the museum at Hellbrunn.

Nonnberg Abbey

The convent above the old town where Maria is a novice in the story, and a photo stop. It is a working abbey: there is no sightseeing in the church during services (Tourismus Salzburg, checked November 2026).

St. Gilgen and Lake Fuschl

The lake views at the start of the film, which the story places at St. Gilgen and the Wolfgangsee, were shot at Lake Fuschl, which you pass on the way. St. Gilgen is a photo stop on the Wolfgangsee.

Mondsee

The wedding was filmed in the basilica here, a pale yellow and white church, and Mondsee is where you get free time. The length of the free time is not stated. The basilica is the town’s working parish church.

What the price covers, and what it does not

The price covers the guide, who speaks English, and the coach between the stops; songs from the film are played on board. It does not cover hotel pickup, entry to any of the places, or tips. Pets are not allowed.

Mirabell Gardens are not a stop. They are across the square from the terminal, 0.2 km on foot, free to enter, and open daily from about 6 am until dusk; the Orangerie garden is closed for redesign until December 2026 (Tourismus Salzburg, checked November 2026). Walk over after the tour.

Reviewers who mark the tour down say much the same things: the price for what is mostly a coach ride with photo stops, little time at each stop, and Leopoldskron seen only from a distance. Many more reviews praise the guide and the singing on the coach.

Morning or afternoon

The two departures are the same tour. From late autumn to winter the choice matters: the 2:00 pm tour gets back after dark. A guest who reviewed the tour on 30 October 2026 wrote that they arrived back in the dark, with the steps and the fountain in pitch black. From November to February, take the 9:15 am departure if you want the stops in daylight and Mirabell Gardens after it. In summer, either works. The tour in winter has the rest of the season.

Where else it is sold

Panorama sells the same tour on Viator as The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, rated 4.7 from 6,855 reviews (checked November 2026).

Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.

Which tour suits you compares the coach, the small group, a private car and the bike ride.
