Bus, Small Group, Private or Bike: Which Sound of Music Tour?
The best Sound of Music tour in Salzburg for you: the coach, Bob's small group, a private car or van, or a bike ride, with prices, times and who each one suits.
For most people the best Sound of Music tour is the four-hour coach tour from Mirabellplatz below, from $84 a person (checked November 2026): it is the one that covers both the sites in the city and the lakes, at 9:15 am or 2:00 pm. Pick Bob’s small-group tour if you are two or more and want to go inside the church at Mondsee. Pick a private car if you are seven or eight, because per head it then costs about what the coach does. Pick the bike if you are fit and happy to skip the lakes.
The coach tour was the same price on 12 November, 8 December and 19 December 2026, and free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.

The coach: the default
Salzburg Panorama Tours’ coach leaves the terminal on Mirabellplatz at 9:15 am and 2:00 pm. It makes photo stops at Schloss Leopoldskron, the garden at Hellbrunn, Nonnberg Abbey and St. Gilgen, then gives free time in Mondsee, and it is back four hours later. A live guide speaks English and songs from the film are played on board. There is no hotel pickup, and entry to the places is not included: the stops are outside. It cost the same on every date we read. The coach tour stop by stop has the detail.
The small group: Bob’s Special Tours
Bob’s tour is the one to pick for the inside of the church at Mondsee. It starts with a walk through the old town around the Cathedral, sees Leopoldskron across its lake, stops at the gazebo in Hellbrunn’s park, drives past the Wolfgangsee for the view, then steps inside the basilica at Mondsee and gives about 40 minutes of free time there. It ends in Mirabell Gardens. In summer it also allows 20 to 25 minutes for the new Sound of Music museum at Hellbrunn, admission not included.
It starts at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm and is sold as four and a half hours. It needs two people to book: with one adult the calendar showed it as unavailable. Food, drinks and entrance fees are not included, and it is not suitable for wheelchair users or people who get motion sickness.
Private: your own car or van
Panorama’s private half-day tour collects you from your hotel and takes four hours with a driver-guide in English, German or Spanish: photo stops at Leopoldskron and the gazebo at Hellbrunn, past Villa Trapp or Schloss Frohnburg when time allows, then the mountain road to the church at Mondsee. It costs $669 for the vehicle and up to 8 people. Per head that is $334.27 for two, $167.14 for four and $83.57 for eight, the same as a coach seat (GetYourGuide, checked November 2026). Start times vary by date: on 12 November it ran at 9:30 am or 2:15 pm, on 8 December at 2:15 pm only. Entrance fees, food and tips are extra.
If you only want the sites in the city, Panorama also sells a private two-hour city tour on Viator for €300 per vehicle, up to 8 (checked November 2026, priced in euros): Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey from below, the festival hall, the lake at Leopoldskron and the Hellbrunn gazebo, with no drive out to the lakes. It starts at 10:00 am, 2:30 pm or 4:00 pm.
By bike

Free Walking Tour Salzburg’s ride starts at Unipark in Nonntal, about ten minutes on foot from the Cathedral, and takes two and a half hours. It follows the Hellbrunner Allee past Schloss Frohnburg to the park at Hellbrunn and its pavilion, sees Leopoldskron across its lake, and climbs to Nonnberg Abbey before the end. The bike is included and children’s bikes are available; riders need a moderate level of fitness. It runs Monday to Friday at 9:30 am and on Saturdays at 9:30 am and 2:30 pm, and the schedule shows no Sunday rides (checked November 2026). There are no lakes: Mondsee and St. Gilgen are a drive away.
For a fit couple with a morning free, the bike is the cheapest guided way to see the sites south of the old town.

If you would rather go alone, the film sites in the city are mostly a walk or a short bus ride from the old town; the homepage has the distances. The lakes are where a tour earns its price: St. Gilgen is 30 km by road from Mirabellplatz.
